How to Sand Guitar Body Before Painting
Sanding a guitar body before painting is a crucial step in the guitar-making process. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do it and this guide is perfect for beginners and seasoned guitar makers alike to achieve the best possible finish:
- Remove the Old Finish: You can sand the body with coarse sandpaper or a paint stripper.
- Initial Sanding: Start with coarse-grit sandpaper (like 120 grit) to remove scratches, bumps, and dents.
- Intermediate Sanding: Switch to medium-grit sandpaper (like 220 grit) to smooth out minor scratch marks left by the coarse sandpaper.
- Fine Sanding: Use fine-grit sandpaper to create a smooth surface for the new finish. Always sand with the grain and not against it. For contours, use a flexible sandpaper or sanding block.
- Cleaning: Use a tack cloth or vacuum cleaner to remove dust or debris after sanding.
- Priming: Apply a primer to the guitar body. This will help the paint adhere better and result in a smoother finish.
- Final Sanding: After the primer has dried, do a final sanding with ultra-fine sandpaper to ensure a perfectly smooth surface. This could be something in the range of 600 to 800 grit. This will ensure a perfectly smooth surface for the paint to adhere to. Remember to always sand in the direction of the grain to avoid scratches and imperfections.
Remember, patience is key when sanding a guitar body. Take your time to ensure a smooth and even surface that will result in a beautiful finish.
What Sandpaper to Use for Sanding Guitar?
When sanding a guitar, you'll typically use a range of sandpapers:
- Coarse grit (80-120 grit): This is used for the initial stages of sanding, especially if you're removing an old finish or smoothing out rough spots.
- Medium grit (150-220 grit): This is used for the intermediate stages of sanding to smooth out the scratches left by the coarse grit sandpaper.
- Fine grit (320-400 grit): This is used for the final stages of sanding before applying a finish. It helps to create a very smooth surface.
- Ultra-fine grit (600-800 grit): This is used after applying the sealer or primer, but before applying the paint. It helps to achieve a glass-like smoothness.
- Microfine grit (1000-2000 grit): This is used for wet sanding between coats of finish for a high gloss look.
Remember, always sand in the direction of the wood grain and clean the surface thoroughly between each stage of sanding to remove any dust or debris.
